Effective January 1, 2007, the length of the International Standard Book Number (ISBN) will officially change from 10 to 13 digits. This change will require book industry organizations to use 13-digit ISBNs instead of 10-digit ISBNs when identifying books in global trade.

The Book Industry Study Group (BISG) has formed an ISBN-13 Task Force to coordinate the implementation of this change among North American book industry organizations. Pearson Education is an active participant in this Task Force. BISG is encouraging all book industry organizations to become “ISBN-13 ready” by January 1, 2007, or as soon as practical thereafter.

Pearson is preparing to accommodate the use of 13-digit ISBNs in customer business transactions (e.g. inquiries, orders, returns) effective January 1, 2007. At the same time, Pearson will continue to accommodate the use 10-digit ISBNs in business transactions with customers who are unable to be “ISBN-13” ready by January 2007. This site will be periodically updated with information about Pearson's ISBN-13 implementation plans.

Below is a tool provided by Pearson Education to quickly translate between 10 and 13 digit ISBN’s – http://isbn13converter.pearsoned.com/.

The BISG maintains an authoritative ISBN-13 Website with recommended implementation guidelines. The BISG Website is periodically updated to reflect the latest ISBN-13 Task Force recommendations.
