Prentice Hall High School Math Digital Path Honored in 2010 "Tech & Learning" Magazine's Awards of Excellence

Engaging Online Environment for Learning Higher Level Math — Among Seven Pearson Products Recognized in Prestigious Awards Program

New York, January 11, 2011 – Prentice Hall High School Math Digital Path is a winner of “Tech & Learning” magazine’s 2010 Awards of Excellence. Developed by: Pearson, the global leader in education, technology and services, this research-based, online high school math program is one of seven of the company’s products to be honored this year with this prestigious award. These prized awards are testimony to the company’s global leadership in developing education-technology solutions that ensure that students are prepared for success in college and careers.

Prentice Hall High School Math Digital Path is among the winning products featured in the December 2010 issue of “Tech & Learning” magazine and will be honored at a special awards ceremony on Feb. 9, 2011, at the Texas Computer Education Association Conference in Austin.

The “Tech & Learning” awards judges lauded the program for its “easy interface for students as well as teachers” and appreciated that it allowed teachers to “easily manage records for many students working at different levels of difficulty.”

Prentice Hall High School Math Digital Path is an engaging component of the core math programs, Prentice Hall Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II, and plays a major role in the programs’ promise to change the way students see math, how they understand concepts and how they can transfer those skills to tests, college and life. The complete programs include both the digital path and print materials.

“Our new high school math program is truly revolutionary because it combines the power of engaging visual learning techniques with a firm foundation in math instruction,” said Mike Evans, Pearson’s senior vice president for mathematics. “We are honored to have Prentice Hall High School Math Digital Path honored by the ed-tech leaders from around the country who served as judges for these awards.”

The program was authored by top experts in math education, including Dr. Randall Charles, past vice president of the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics and professor emeritus, Department of Mathematics at San Jose State University; as well as Stuart Murphy, a visual learning expert from the Rhode Island School of Design, who collaborated on the development on this cutting-edge new approach to math instruction. One of the key visual elements in the program is a group of Avatars that offer students hints on how to begin a problem. Other design elements Murphy injected throughout the program include rich, detailed visual representations of many of the book’s word problems and deliberate use of color-coding schemes to define the stepped-out sequence in problem-solving.

In addition to its rich and engaging design, Pearson’s new math program is built on the company’s tradition of developing research- and standards-based quality curriculum. Prentice Hall High School Math Digital Path is aligned to the new Common Core Standards for Mathematics, as well as individual state standards. A recent independent efficacy study demonstrates that students across the nation are ready to tackle the rigors of higher level math after learning with: Prentice Hall High School Math 2011. According to the research conducted by Planning, Research and Evaluation Services (PRES) Associates, data confirm that students improve their assessment scores by 38 percentile points after learning with the program for just one year.
