Math Intervention Program Aligns to NCTM Curriculum Focal Points

Students Explore Real-Life Mathematics Through Pearson’s New AMP Math System

Chandler, AZ. Apr. 10, 2008 — Pearson’s new AMP Math System is the first math intervention program to provide comprehensive alignment with and specifically address the curriculum focal points provided by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NTCM). Introduced this week at the NCTM’s Annual Meeting, AMP Math is designed to help students receive a solid foundation in and core knowledge of math. It also meets the recommendations of the National Math Panel, including curricular content, learning process, instructional practices, and teacher education

The AMP Math System delivers a research-based, fully aligned math intervention program for middle and high school students who are struggling to connect and apply fundamental math concepts. Content rich and full of modeled and reinforced concepts, AMP Math System has student guides, practice workbooks , and its own unique AMP Link magazine featuring real-life math applications and problems embedded within high-interest articles written for the struggling reader.

According to the NCTM, “The curriculum focal points are the most important mathematical topics for each grade level. They comprise related ideas, concepts, skills, and procedures that form the foundation for understanding and lasting learning.” Each unit in the AMP Math System covers a curriculum focal point and its connections. The AMP Math System works with any basal program and targets students one or more grades below level.

AMP Math System Facts

The scientific research base of the AMP Math System matches to national standards with:

Problem Solving –

  • Six problem solving strategies introduced in the first unit and applied throughout the program.
  • High interest, student selected topics which provide context for math scenarios in student guides and in the AMP Link magazines.
  • Every lesson allows students to explain their mathematical reasoning and evaluate their approaches.
Skill Acquisition and Practice–
  • The instructional model provides students continuous scaffolded opportunities to solve problems with the teacher, in pairs, small teams, or independently.
  • Skills practice workbooks provide opportunities to build automaticity and computational fluency.
Reading –
  • Reading best practices from the AMP Reading System are built in to deepen understanding of math concepts and scenarios before beginning computation.
  • Math vocabulary is integrated into each lesson at the beginning of each new concept.
Teaching and Learning Strategies –
  • Each lesson creates a teaching and learning environment to enhance and improve the social process and broaden understanding.

"A major challenge for many school districts in the United States is the creation of a coherent mathematics program that includes sustained opportunities to learn,” said William F. Tate, AMP Math System consultant and Edward Mallinckrodt Distinguished University Professor in Arts & Sciences at Washington University, St. Louis. “The AMP Math System is designed to address this void. The program is a support structure engineered to give every student a strong mathematical foundation to help them be successful.”

Siegfried Haenisch, Ed.D., a nationally recognized math educator and the content reviewer of the AMP Math System, said, “We are deeply interested in the development of skills and the ability for students to solve problems. In this regard, I believe AMP Math will be extremely successful.”

The AMP Math System is available for viewing and distribution at the NCTM Annual Meeting and Exposition. For additional information about the program, visit www.pearsonschool.com and search for AMP Math.
