PBS NOVA Documentary Focuses on Controversy Around Evolution vs. Intelligent Design Dr. Kenneth Miller, Pearson Biology Textbook Author, Featured in TV Special BOSTON, MA. Thursday, November 8, 2007—An interview with Dr. Kenneth Miller, co-author (with Joseph Levine) of Pearson’s Biology textbook for high school students, will be part of a NOVA documentary on the Kitzmiller v. Dover case, the first legal test of intelligent design as a “scientific theory,” to be aired on PBS stations Tuesday, November 13 at 8:00 pm ET/PT. The two-hour documentary “Judgment Day: Intelligent Design on Trial” uses trial re-enactments and interviews with expert scientists as well as with Dover, Pennsylvania parents, teachers, and town officials to capture the story behind the controversy that erupted in Dover in 2005. Dr. Miller testified for the plaintiffs at the Kitzmiller v. Dover trial. At the time of the trial, Dr. Miller, a Brown University professor and author of Pearson’s Biology textbook used in nearly half the schools in the Nation, testified that virtually every prominent scientific organization in the United States has upheld Darwin's theory of evolution as an unshakeable pillar of science. Dr. Miller has said that “No idea should be inserted into the science classroom by force of law unless that idea can first win a place for itself in the scientific community.” Lynda Cloud, Pearson’s Senior Vice President for Science Product Management noted that the company has published Dr. Miller’s Biology texts for 20 years. She said, “We firmly believe that a critical component of understanding and appreciating science involves the continued investigation around multiple ideas and theories. It is essential for scientists to realize that freedom, and to be supported in their passion for continued exploration – a passion that has driven the discoveries of scientists for centuries in the past and will continue in the future. At Pearson, we are extremely proud of Ken’s work and continue to support his ability to maintain that intellectual momentum.” For additional comments by Dr. Miller and for a video preview of the NOVA special, please go to: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/id/ and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UiEP-XSApgY
