Pearson Prentice Hall's Mathematics Online Intervention System Improves Test Scores, Independent Study Confirms Research Methods Aligned With What Works Clearinghouse Standards Upper Saddle River, NJ - December 5, 2005 -Ninth grade students using Pearson Prentice Hall's Mathematics Online Intervention System (MOIS) for Algebra 1 improved their test scores over non-users by 20 percentile points, according to an independent study commissioned by the publisher. Pearson Prentice Hall is part of Pearson Education, the global leader in educational publishing. MOIS, a program for grade 6 through Algebra I, is designed to help teachers identify student strengths and weaknesses via online diagnostic testing, and then quickly address the learning needs of individual students. MOIS includes powerful assessment, diagnosis, intervention, and reporting tools that allow teachers to provide intervention activities along with reports that are automatically generated for students, teachers, administrators, and parents. The reports help teachers and schools track to state and national standards, and may be used to guide schools and districts to achieve adequate yearly progress (AYP) under No Child Left Behind (NCLB). Conducted by independent educational research firm Gatti Evaluation, Inc., the randomized control trial of ninth grade urban-fringe students showed that users of the program and the accompanying online Interactive Text achieved significant gains in pre- to post-implementation test scores. In addition to the percentile improvement, the study also shows that use of the program significantly increases algebraic achievement scores; that students can bring their work up to grade level with proper implementation of the program; and that MOIS is effective with a variety of student populations, including urban-fringe students, across diverse algebraic skills. One teacher saw her MOIS group increase from a mean score of 35% to 49% while the control group went from 39% to 45%. The study design was in compliance with the What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) criteria to ensure the accuracy and fidelity of the outcomes. The WWC is the Federal agency established in 2002 to provide the educational community and the public with a trusted source of scientific evidence of what works in education. "These independent research findings corroborate what informal research has shown," said Rick Culp, President of Pearson Prentice Hall. "Namely, that our Math Online Intervention System helps teachers and students not only meet but surpass their academic goals."
