Dr. Michael Klentschy, Pearson Scott Foresman Consulting Author, To Receive National Science Education Leadership Award

Upper Saddle River, NJ - March 15, 2005- Dr. Michael Klentschy, Superintendent of Schools for California's El Centro School District, will receive the National Science Education Leadership Association's 2005 Kendall Hunt/NSELA Outstanding Administrator Support Award. He is being honored for his long-term advocacy for science education.

Dr. Klentschy is a Consulting Author for publisher Pearson Scott Foresman's Science, a new research-based K-6 program using four teacher-recommended elements: Scaffolded Inquiry™, moving students from directed to guided to full inquiry; cross-curricular connections linking reading and science skills in each chapter; content leveled readers that provide students with differentiated instruction; and time-saving strategies such as Quick Teaching Plans™ and the 30-second lab setup system.

The award will be presented on April 1, 2005, in Dallas, as part of the National Science Teachers Association's annual conference. In addition to this public recognition, Dr. Klentschy will receive a $1,000 cash award.

Dr. Klentschy is currently the Principal Investigator of the Imperial Valley CaMSP Science Project and is Co-Director of the California Science Subject Matter Project Regional Center in Imperial Valley. He serves as an instructor at San Diego State University Graduate School of Education, teaching and conducting research on alternate forms of assessment in elementary science. Dr. Klentschy is also working with Dr. James Stigler, Professor of Psychology at UCLA and CEO of LessonLab, in the development of video-based technology for preservice, professional development and lesson study applications. In November 2004, an international jury in Saint Etienne, France named Dr. Klentschy as co-laureate for the inaugural Le Prix Purkwa, an international prize for the scientific literacy of the children of the planet.
