Special Education Text First To Be Translated Into Chinese
UPPER SADDLE RIVER,N.J., September 1, 2004 – Exceptional Lives: Special Education in Today’s Schools, 4e one of the leading introductory textbooks for special education, has become the first American special education textbook to be translated into Chinese. The book is authored by Ann P. Turnbull, Rud Turnbull, Marilyn Shank, and Sean J. Smith. The book, published by Pearson Merrill Prentice Hall, was translated by staff at East China Normal University in Shanghai. Ann and Rud Turnbull, who are professors at the University of Kansas, worked with one of their graduate students, Mian Wang, in helping with the translation by East China Normal University. Both schools have a growing partnership in special education. The Turnbulls have been instrumental in drafting regulations for special education in the United States. According to Rud Turnbull, 60 million Chinese students have disabilities and the Chinese government is looking at drafting special education legislation that emulates some of the regulations in use here. The Turnbulls are co-directors of the Beach Center on Disability at the University of Kansas, which helps conduct research and provides training and technical assistance to improve the lives of people with disabilities. Co-author Sean J. Smith is a professor in the Department of Special Education at the School of Education at the University Kansas. Marilyn Shank is on the faculty of the education department at the University of Charleston in West Virginia. About Pearson Education
