Winners Announced for "What History Means to Me" Essay Contest, Co-sponsored by American Heritage and Prentice-Hall Students from New Jersey and Kansas Win $2500 Each. Essays to Be Published in American Heritage Magazine New York, NY - September 18, 2003 - American Heritage, the nation’s leading history magazine, and Pearson Prentice Hall, a leader in the U.S. secondary education market, awarded two Grand Prize awards of $2500 to the winners of this year’s “What History Means to Me” Essay Contest. Sabrina Echaluce, an eighth-grader from Lake Riviera Middle School in Brick, New Jersey, and Sarah Sellers, an eleventh-grader from Topeka High School in Topeka, Kansas, won the middle school and high school awards for their personal observations and explorations into the subject of history. American Heritage Editor Richard Snow and Pearson Prentice Hall Senior Vice President Douglas McCollum will present the awards at a luncheon at New York City’s Forbes Gallery on September 19th. Echaluce’s and Sellers’ essays will be featured in the October 2003 issue of American Heritage. Twelve additional students received honorable mentions in the contest, and excerpts from their essays will also appear in American Heritage. They include: Elizabeth Barry of Homewood, Illinois; Christina Chen of Alameda, California; Bronson Conlin of Danbury, Connecticut; Matt Helder of Campbell, California; Ryder Kessler of New York, New York; Louise Li of Fayetteville, Arkansas; Andrea Hsiang-En Liu of Irvine, California; Kim Reinhart of Franklin, Michigan; Priyanka Sen of Houston, Texas; Kelly Stephens of Troy, Michigan; Annsleigh Thornton of Atlanta, Georgia; and Rebecca Wall of Mountain Lakes, New Jersey. Teachers who sponsored the grand prize-winning and honorable mention students will receive a selection of classroom resources. "Our goal when we created this contest was to encourage students to think about history as it relates to them personally, to make connections between historical events and today, and to understand how history affects them. These contest winners were able to make their personal connections to history come alive through their writing." said McCollum. This is the fifth and final year that American Heritage and Pearson Prentice Hall will be sponsoring the contest.
