Pearson Digital Learning's Knowledgebox® Celebrates 'Between The Lions' Parents' Choice Gold Award

Upper Saddle, NJ - September 10, 2003 - Between the Lions, the PBS children's series adapted for use on Pearson Digital Learning's KnowledgeBox® K-6 digital learning system, has won the coveted Parents' Choice Gold Award as the Best Children's Television Show for the 4-7 age group. This marks the second time Between the Lions has won the award in its three years on the air.

Through a unique partnership between Pearson Digital Learning, Pearson Education, WGBH-TV and Sirius Thinking Ltd, Between the Lions programming has been transformed into more than 150 standards-based lessons for grades K-3 that are delivered exclusively through the KnowledgeBox learning system. All lessons are designed to deliver instruction in the five key areas of scientifically based reading research: phonemic awareness, text comprehension, phonics, fluency and vocabulary.

"KnowledgeBox bases its reputation on its ability to deliver meaningful, research-based content in such a way that young learners will be totally engaged, excited, and successful in learning," said Meredith Palmer, director of marketing at Pearson Digital Learning. "Between the Lions allows us to take that concept to the highest level. Its educational value is well-known among educators, and this award clearly demonstrates that parents, too, have recognized its excellence."

A dedicated team of curriculum specialists, instructional designers, artists, and producers created the instructional media that is at the heart of the KnowledgeBox/Between the Lions lessons. The exclusive lessons combine innovative animation, puppetry, and music from the television episodes with software activities, print resources, and Internet links to build a robust digital literacy curriculum for grades K-3.

The KnowledgeBox/ Between the Lions lessons are ready-to-use and, when combined with printable teacher lesson plans, can be easily integrated into an existing reading program. By mixing and matching the Between the Lions media elements with other KnowledgeBox digital media, teachers can also create customized lessons for individual or groups of students.

The Parents' Choice Awards are presented by the Parents' Choice Foundation, the nation's oldest not-for-profit evaluator of children's books, videos, toys, audios, computer software, television, and magazines. The Foundation's mission is to provide parents with information to participate wisely in their children's learning.
