Pearson Education Launches Research Navigator™ with The New York Times and EBSCO

Upper Saddle River, NJ - January 8, 2003 - Pearson Education, the world's leading educational publisher (a Pearson company, NYSE: PSO), announced the launch of Research Navigator™ (www.researchnavigator.com), a new on-line academic research destination that incorporates archival content from The New York Times and EBSCO, an academic journal and abstract collection.

Available as part of the purchase of any Pearson Education college textbook, the Research Navigator™ site combines three databases - New York Times Search by Subject Archive, EBSCO's ContentSelect™ Academic Journal and Abstract Database and Link Library's "Best of the Web." An exclusive feature to Research Navigator™, The New York Times archive is organized by more than 135 academic subjects and searchable by keywords. Instructors and students can view full-text Times articles from the past year.

The EBSCO ContentSelect™ collection is culled from thousands of academic articles, organized by discipline and is fully searchable. Articles from periodicals such as Newsweek and USA Today are included as well, providing access to topical content from a variety of sources. Pearson Education's Link Library, organized by subject, provides editorially selected "best of the Web" sites and is continually updated to provide relevant and accurate links for research assignments.

"In this information economy, everyone can benefit from developing good research skills -- in school and beyond into professional life," says Will Ethridge, president, Pearson Higher Education and Professional Publishing. "Research Navigator represents the next evolutionary step in the use of the Internet in academic research - while at the same time instilling time-tested research processes and the value of the library down the street."

Helping students understand the steps in the research process is the key goal of Research Navigator™, which also provides in-depth information on conducting library research. The site features extensive research tips written by university professors and authors to address the complexities of the research process. Topics include evaluating source materials; collecting data, both on-line and at the library; Modern Language Association (MLA) and other standards; and maintaining academic integrity.

"The volume of information contained in libraries, ever-growing databases, innumerable Web sites and research materials can overwhelm even the most knowledgeable information seeker," said Thomas Carley, president, News Services, The New York Times. "Resource Navigator provides the best of both on-line and traditional library resources."

"Beyond the vast amounts of organized traditional research content, this site allows students to take full advantage of the best up-to-date Internet research sources as well," says Major Dave Filer, an instructor of political science at the United States Military Academy at West Point. "I particularly like that students have one portal from which to launch their research into a variety of directions. User friendly and instructive, this site will be valuable to students and faculty alike."

Features in Detail: Research Navigator™ Research Guidance

The "Understanding the Research Process" section of Research Navigator™ is comprised of information, guidance, and useful Web links. It directs students step-by-step through the research process and allows professors to save time explaining the intricacies of effective research. Topics include: "Using the Internet for Research," with search engine guides and ratings; "Citing Sources," with citation formats from the MLA; and "Using Your Library," a virtual roadmap -- written by a leading library scientist -- for efficiently navigating the vast resources of the library using electronic databases, Boolean search terms, newsgroups, microfiches, and a host of other tools and resources.

Research Navigator™ is available to be packaged with any Pearson Higher Education textbook from Pearson Allyn & Bacon/Pearson Longman, Pearson Benjamin Cummings, Pearson Custom Publishing, or Pearson Prentice Hall. It will also be automatically available to those using CourseCompass, Pearson Education's interactive on-line learning platform.
