Early Education Technology Solutions Boost Reading and Math Scores in Title I Schools

Scottsdale, AZ - October 29, 2002 - As President Bush and Congress begin implementing the requirements of the Federal No Child Left Behind initiative, six at-risk schools are already being recognized for the measurable gains they have achieved through the application of technology to reading and math instruction in the early grades. The students and teachers at these schools have achieved their success through the use of the Waterford Early Reading Program™ and Waterford Early Math & Science™, two research-based programs crated by the non-profit Waterford Institute, located in Sandy, Utah.

The Waterford Institute, a nonprofit educational research organization dedicated to helping children learn through the effective use of technology, and Electronic Education today announced the winners of a nationwide survey of schools using technology to improve reading, math and science proficiency in the early grades. The organizations selected the following schools to receive the Waterford Best Practices Research Site Award:

  • Caldwood Elementary, Beaumont, TX
  • Commons Lane Elementary, Florissant, MO
  • Ditmar Elementary, Oceanside, CA
  • Druid Hills Elementary, Martinsville, VA
  • Parsons Accelerated School, Decatur, IL
  • Scott Lane Elementary, Santa Clara, CA

As a Best Practices site, each school will be recognized as a national example of how early education technology can be successfully implemented in support of reading, math, or science instruction.

This year's six recognized sites were chosen from among more than 2,500 schools using the Waterford Early Reading Program™ and Waterford Early Math & Science™ nationwide. Each school was selected based on carefully documented evidence of effective curriculum integration, a measurable impact on student achievement, and a record of long-term parental involvement and administrative support.

With over 12 years of scientific research behind its curriculum, the Waterford Institute has developed the two programs; the Waterford Early Reading Program™ and the Waterford Early Math & Science™, to help students in grades K-2 develop and improve their proficiency in reading, math and science. Electronic Education is a division of Pearson Education, the nation's largest K-12 educational publisher, and exclusively responsible for sales, support, and training of Waterford products.

"Title I funded schools across the country recognize the value technology can play in educating our nation's at-risk children," said Bob Roliardi, president of Electronic Education. "We are thrilled to recognize these schools and showcase their dedication to providing a better education to their students by using technology."

Electronic Education and the Waterford Institute annually recognize schools and/or districts that meet the highest standard for research quality, implementation, and results. In addition to the six Best Practice Award winners, Electronic Education and the Waterford Institute also recognized five Demonstration Sites for their consistent use of instructional materials, impact on student achievement, and quality instructional methods. They include Glendale School District in Flinton, PA, Gerald Neary Elementary in Haverstraw, NY, Easton Elementary in Winston-Salem, NC, Waynesboro Primary School in Waynesboro, GA and W. Russell Todd School in Roosevelt, UT.
