Pearson Scholarship Fund Established for Borough of Manhattan Community College

Pearson Education Gift in Memory of Students Lost on September 11

Upper Saddle River, NJ - April 24, 2002 - Pearson Education (Pearson, NYSE: PSO) the world's leading integrated education publisher, announced that it will give the Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) a major gift of $200,000 for scholarships through the Pearson Scholarship Fund, created in response to the tragic events of September 11. The first round of scholarships will be awarded in April 2002.

Pearson Education made the gift in memory of six BMCC students who lost their lives in the World Trade Center disaster and in honor of medical rescue workers at Ground Zero. Up to six scholarships will be awarded annually for a period of at least five years.

To be eligible for the distinguished award, students must be enrolled in a degree program in paramedics, nursing, respiratory therapy, or health information technology. A scholarship committee established by BMCC will select Pearson Scholars based on achievement and an essay describing why they want to pursue a career in the health sciences.

"Pearson's generous gift to BMCC will allow up to 30 students to study tuition-free for up to three semesters," explained BMCC President Antonio Pérez. "These scholarships will benefit not only our students, but the people of New York City who rely on the nurses, paramedics, respiratory therapists and health information technicians who graduate from our college."

"The tragic events of September 11 placed a renewed focus on the importance of educating our future emergency medical professionals and supporting their work," said Robin Baliszewski, President of Prentice Hall's Career, Health, Education, and Technology Division. "We are committed to educating these individuals who are so vital to our national safety. Through this scholarship program we can honor the BMCC students who lost their lives as well as pay tribute to the brave emergency medical workers who help to keep our city safe."

A special presentation will take place on the campus of BMCC on Monday, May 13, 2002, to award the scholarships. Family members of those lost on September 11, BMCC President Antonio Pérez, teaching staff from BMCC's Health Science department, as well as Addison Wesley authors and Pearson Education executives are expected to attend.
