Pearson Education Appoints Irene McAfee Vice President and Director of Educational Research and Development

Upper Saddle River, NJ - January 22, 2002 - Pearson Education (Pearson plc, NYSE: PSO) today announced the appointment of Irene McAfee to Vice President and Director of Educational Research and Development. Dr. McAfee will be Pearson Education's principal strategist for research and validation programs across the company's preK-12 businesses.

Commenting on McAfee's appointment, Pearson CEO Peter Jovanovich said, "Pearson Education has long been respected for the resources it dedicates to developing research-based learning materials. This work becomes even more critical as states begin to implement President Bush's 'Leave No Child Behind' legislation." Jovanovich continued, "As we move into the early learning market and continue to expand our preK-12 technology and print-based programs, we look to Dr. McAfee to oversee the independent research and validation that provides the credibility our customers expect from Pearson Education."

McAfee will also assist in evaluating partnership and business development activities relating to Pearson's education technology.

"I look forward to cultivating the design and implementation standards that have made Pearson Education a leader in research-based education," said McAfee. "I want to encourage collaboration across the Pearson companies to establish common goals, accelerate our agenda, and align our products with the national education bill's emphasis on research-based education."
