New York, NY — May 14, 2010-Johnna S. Temenoff and Antonios G. Mikos, co-authors of Biomaterials: The Intersection of Biology and Materials Science (Pearson), have been chosen to receive the 2010 Meriam/Wiley Distinguished Author Award from the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE). This marks the first time that authors of a biomedical engineering textbook have been recognized with this award.
Funded through an endowment established by Professor James L. Meriam and John Wiley & Sons, the Meriam/Wiley Distinguished Author Award recognizes excellence in the authorship of engineering books, with nominated titles coming from professional engineering schools across the U.S.
Biomaterials: The Intersection of Biology and Materials Science offers a multidisciplinary approach to the subject of biomaterials — natural or synthetic substances which treat, change or replace any tissue, organ, or function of the body — focusing on materials analysis while offering a thorough presentation of biological considerations. The authors believe that the exploration of overlap between these disparate fields is essential and will provide a first step for the many future biomaterialists in discovering vital intersections of their own.
“This textbook’¦. will undoubtedly become a staple in biomaterials education. It addresses the right amount of knowledge and will fill a major gap in the field of biomaterials science. Professors Temenoff and Mikos have made a great service to the field.” Nicholas A. Peppas, Sc.D., Fletcher S. Pratt Chair of Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and Pharmacy, University of Texas at Austin.
“Johnna and I are incredibly honored by this award and the wonderful recognition it brings to our textbook,” said Mikos. “We would like to thank ASEE and Pearson for their tremendous support.”
The award presentation will take place at the ASEE’s Annual Conference and Exposition, to be held June 20-23 at the Kentucky International Convention Center.
