Owatonna, MN — June 14, 2011— Pearson’s first wind turbine is now fully operational, in time to celebrate Global Wind Day on June 15th, a worldwide event that encourages people around the world to discover the power of wind and the possibilities it holds to change the world. The 95-kilowatt wind turbine is located at Pearson’s Print Services location in Owatonna, MN.
"The turbine will offset approximately 119 metric tons of CO2 annually, or 2,830 metric tons — an equivalent of 5,540 barrels of oil — over its twenty-year life," said Rick Lent, Quality Initiatives Manager, Pearson. "This represents the latest step in our ongoing commitment to serve as good corporate, and world, citizens."
This renewable energy project follows Pearson’s installation of solar panels on the roof of the company’s data center in Old Tappan, NJ. The switch to solar energy will offset about 4000 tons of CO2 over the 25-year life of the panels, the equivalent of planting more than 100,000 trees.: Additional investments in renewable energy projects are planned.
Pearson was the first global media company to commit to becoming carbon neutral, a goal achieved in 2009. Since 2007, the company has reduced its U.S. electricity use by over 20 percent. In 2010 the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency named Pearson as one of its Green Power partners for its commitment to using and promoting green energy. Pearson currently ranks No. 25 on EPA’s National Top 50 list of green power purchasers.
Pearson’s "Green" initiatives include transforming its corporate fleet to include more fuel-efficient vehicles, expanding the use of online training and meeting tools, and investing in video conferencing.
