West Burlington, IA, April 09, 2012 — The Iowa Community College Online Consortium (ICCOC) has extended its contract with Pearson to power the colleges’ online programs, Pearson announced today. ICCOC has worked with Pearson to develop and offer courses online for a dozen years, and the two organizations continue to refine their strategy to identify at-risk students early and offer assistance.
The Iowa consortium includes seven community colleges and serves more than 20,000 students each semester. Using the Pearson LearningStudio platform and its suite of reporting tools, ICCOC has increased at-risk student success rates by 11 percent and course completion rates by nearly 10 percent. As a result of increased revenue due to students’ persistence within courses, ICCOC is able to offer online tutoring and faculty professional development to further impact student achievement. The online learning format has allowed the consortium to expand access to learning opportunities, with more than 1,000 course sections and 10 fully online degree programs now available. ICCOC uses Pearson’s Smarthinking on-demand tutoring, in addition to the Pearson LearningStudio platform.
“Extending our relationship with Pearson was an easy decision,” said Steve Rheinschmidt, Director of the ICCOC. “Through our alliance with Pearson, our educators are empowered with information to identify, track and target specific areas for student improvement. This means our learners are more likely to successfully complete their education.”
“ICCOC has done a remarkable job of leveraging resources to offer learning opportunities to residents statewide,” said Matt Leavy, CEO of Pearson eCollege. “We look forward to building on our successful collaboration to further increase access to higher education and support students’ achievement.”
ICCOC is a finalist in the 2012 IMS Global Learning Consortium’s Learning Impact Awards, which recognize outstanding applications of education technology. ICCOC will discuss its successful program at the Learning Impact Conference on May 14 in Toronto.
