Mathematics & Statistics
Helping students achieve success at all levels
Smarthinking’s tutors work through math and statistics problems with students online, using a virtual whiteboard. Students can schedule an appointment in advance or request a drop-in session. Students can also submit questions offline anytime, and a tutor will respond within 24 hours.
Smarthinking’s math tutors do not solve problems but rather help students learn underlying Mathematics and Statistics concepts to handle future assignments on their own. Tutors provide understanding, not answers.
A variety of subjects—from basic to advanced
Tutors are available to help with the following topics in math and stats:
Bilingual Math (English/Spanish)
Liberal Arts Math

Academic Coordinator, Statistics
Kyra began working with Smarthinking as a statistics tutor in 2012. Prior to joining the Smarthinking team, she gained significant tutoring experience by working as a student tutor, teaching assistant, and instructor in various capacities. Kyra holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics with a concentration in actuarial studies and a master’s degree in biostatistics. Her favorite parts of tutoring include individualizing each lesson and seeing the “aha moments” in her students as they gain confidence in challenging topics.
Dale Johanson has been a Smarthinking Math Tutor since 2002 and served as a Math Coordinator since 2011. He tutors in Mathematics, Algebra, Geometry and Calculus. Dale has an M.A in Mathematics from the University of South Dakota.
Lisa Morris DeReus, M.Ap.St.
Senior Manager, Mathematics & Statistics
Lisa holds a Master of Applied Statistics degree, as well as a B.A. in Chemistry/Biochemistry. She brought with her nearly 10 years of teaching, research, and tutoring experience at Louisiana State University, and a love of helping others to learn. Her work at LSU included pioneering web-based and mixed delivery courses in Sampling Design and Analysis, Statistical Methods, and Regression Analysis, while her research involved developing new mathematical models to estimate alligator survival parameters. A lifelong learner herself, Lisa understands the challenges that students in different life stages can face, and enjoys helping students to uncover their strengths.
