Patrick Supanc had been working as the senior vice president of new ventures and innovation for Pearson when he started to think about how he could further evolve the state of education technology. What he had realized was that content could be delivered online more effectively, and that high school students could be preparing for college in a fundamentally different way. So, the SVP of new ventures pitched Pearson on a new venture, and they were, thankfully, open to it. “That’s how innovation gets fostered in a large organization,” Supanc says. “I think Pearson took a very brave step.” What Supanc pitched was Alleyoop, an online tutoring company catered toward college readiness that’s currently focused on math. “If you take 100 ninth graders in high school, only 17 of them are going to graduate on time,” Supanc says, admitting traditional approaches to education just weren’t working. “I really saw this clash between traditional approaches to using technology and education to how technology is used by teens outside of school.”
